A Visit to the Safari

This artwork was made for an augmented reality exhibition in a public space in Jerusalem. The exhibition combined actual paintings with a virtual dimension that could be seen through the screen of a cell phone. With the help of advanced AR technology, those virtual images appeared to be part of the surrounding environment.
My work, which combined illustration and animation, was inspired by the initial period of the Covid epidemic, when people were confined to their homes and wild animals hesitantly began to explore the urban spaces that until then belonged exclusively to human beings. Inspired by this brief and rare moment, I created an inverted world, in which the animals wander around the city as if it were their own, "touring" its streets and watching the confined humans through their windows.
I chose wild animals because we usually experience them when they are confined in a zoo. Through these "animal tourists" peering into our intimate human spaces, animals and human beings exchanged roles. Suddenly, we were in a zoo while they freely observed us.
The exhibition, titled "PosTourisma," was initiated by the Tohu Collective of Jerusalem and commissioned by the Jerusalem Municipality, which displayed the work at City Hall.
